Gwilym Meredith Edwards was a Welsh character actor and writer.
He was born in mining village of Rhosllannerchrugog, near Wrexham, the son of a collier. He was educated at Ruabon Grammar School. He became an actor in 1938, firstly with the Welsh National Theatre Company, then the Liverpool Playhouse.
His film appearances include "A Run for Your Money" (1949), "The Blue Lamp" (1950), "The Magnet" (1950), "The Lavender Hill Mob" (1951), "The Cruel Sea" (1953), "The Great Game" (1953), "The Long Arm" (1956), "Dunkirk" (1958) and "Tiger Bay" (1959). He appeared as the murderous butler in the cult television series "Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)" in 1969, and as Tom in the cult children's science fiction serial "Sky" in 1975. He also played Richard Lloyd in the 1981 TV series "The Life and Times of David Lloyd George".

The series was made at Elstree in twin production with The Saint TV series. It starred Liverpudlian John Gregson in the title role as Commander George Gideon of Scotland Yard, with Alexander Davion as his assistant, Detective Chief Inspector David Keen, Reginald Jessup as Det. Superintendent LeMaitre, Ian Rossiter as Detective Chief Superintendent Joe Bell and Basil Dignam as Commissioner Scott-Marle. The show did not acknowledge any help from Scotland Yard, any other police force or advisor. Daphne Anderson starred as his wife, Kate with Giles Watling as young son, Malcolm, Richard James as older son, Matthew who seemed to have a lot of new girlfriends and Andrea Allan as daughter, Pru. Unusually for police stories, Gideon was shown as a family man at home though urgent phone calls from his bosses tend to disrupt family plans too often. However, he did admit in "State Visit" that his wife had walked out on him for a while years ago when he put the job first and her second. They live in an expensive detached house in Chelsea.

The series was a period drama created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland and starred Nerys Hughes as Megan Roberts, the titular district nurse fighting to improve living conditions for the people living in a poverty stricken mining town, Pencwm, in south Wales during the late 1920s. The School scenes were filmed at Pont-y-gof school in Ebbw Vale, shortly before the old school was demolished. The children and teachers at the school were involved in the first two series. The outdoor school and street scenes were filmed at a small village near Tredegar. Most of the houses used have now been demolished, however the street still remains. In the third series, shown in 1987 and set in the early 1930s, Megan had moved on to the seaside town of Glanmor where she worked with a father/son pair of doctors - Emlyn Isaacs and James Isaacs.
